I realise you may be looking to get away from source based, but,
my 2 cents worth is, I run a distro called SourceMage which is also
source based but is fairly nifty with the way it allows you to select
when and what you would like to update.

I agree with others about recompiling desktops as being a pain so this
distro allows you to place those that you have working well on hold
until your prepared to update.

Anyhow, just thought different point of view might be nice :))
