Sounds like an idea. I've run into one mouse that just wouldn't work at 
all. Some additional investigation showed that it didn't support the USB 
HID class driver interface, but required its own custom interface.

Another one I've seen issues with (since resolved in newer kernels?) was 
the MS Wheel Mouse Optical. It didn't want to talk to the full HID 
driver, only the basic mouse interface driver (supposed to be used for 
things like mouse functions during OS install or from BIOS etc - not 
main operation).

Hope you have some luck with this. It's fair to note that there's 
nothing wrong with a PS/2 mouse (though I find them frustrating, as I 
have USB ports in my keyboard - most PS/2 mice have cable reach issues 
in my setup).
