hey everyone,

I guess this is a mini-survey since there are folks
out there using various distros...

How much memory does your desktop machine use
in this default state?

One xterm, local
One Xterm, ssh to another machine
Gnome or KDE running (whichever you normally use)

obviously most of us run various other things in the background

e.g. cups, smb, sshd

so if they are going when you measure it's worth mentioning...

simple measure i.e. cat /proc/meminfo

My experimental Gnome setup is running those basic
desktop functions plus cups, smb, sshd
and seems to use roughly 185 Meg.

I'm not sure if this is to be expected, or if there is
something wrong I'm not noticing...
I don't have another machine to really compare with..

apache is running 2 processes, roughly 3 megs each..
cups, smb, shhd are all running

I guess I have the feeling it's all a bit much for idling...

figures for comparison most welcome
