[plug] netpbm to stdout

I have a dell installed RH7.0 system where printing to stdout by the
netpbm utilities (e.g., tifftopnm) does not work.  It prints a couple of
lines of data, and then nothing.  The utility runs for the about the
right amount of time to read in the file.  Ive never come across
anything like this before, so would like some hints as to what is
happening.  I am using a number of utilities to transpose some images in
a script.  I built a new rpm (SRPM) and installed that with no effect,
so maybe its an environmental thing?
