If you want to use Linux to start learning about the twilight zone between
hardware and software then this is an informative book:
Linux Device Drivers
Alessandro Rubini
O'Reilly
ISBN 1-56592-292-1
It uses the parallel port as a simple I/O device to explain how the hw and sw
interect (that's the job of the driver).
It is now in it's second edition I think but I have the first; released in 98.
