I'm no expert here, but I'll explain my understanding of it. Martians
are packets that shouldn't have been able to appear on the interface
that they did. For example, if you have a private LAN on 192.168.0.0/24
and a packet comes in on eth0 (where the LAN is attached) from
203.0.178.191 (iiNet's DNS) ... its a martian.
Martian packets usually indicate routing/network issues or sometimes
deliberate attempts to bypass firewalls using spoofing. Note that it
wouldn't be a martian if your default route was via a host on that
private lan - but if you have a non-inet connected PC getting packets
from IPs it doesn't know how to route to, you're getting martians.
