Hmmm...
While I don't know what caused this, here is what I found:
If I ran /usr/bin/safe_mysqld, it still just died.
If I ran /usr/sbin/mysqld, it died, but the console told me:
mysqld: unrecognized option `--log-error=/var/log/mysql/mysql.err'
Looking for that token was fun, it ended up being the line inside
/etc/mysql/my.cnf, which read: log-error=/var/log/mysql/mysql.err
If I comment out that line, all is well in the world.
Now for my questions, which I'll log as a bug-report I guess to Debian:
mysql-server, how did this option get here - since it's a v4 option and
I'm only running version 3.23.52 from testing.
The server ran fine until the 19th, when it died and didn't come back.
The computer has been restarted several times before that and since.
Anyway, thanks all for your help...I'll let you know what the maintainer
reckons...
