Subject: [first_wednesday] Meeting Notice: Wed Nov 5th 2003 @ 6pm

Hello folks,

It's the first week of the month again, which means it's almost time for
the First Wednesday meeting again! On behalf of SAGE-AU (the System
Administrators Guild of Australia) and AUUG (Australian UNIX and Open
Systems Users Group) it is our pleasure to invite you to attend.

This Wednesday, November the 5th we have a talk by Alan Main of
Functional Software, entitled "Bar stewards, height and perseverance".
At least, that's what I thought he said, but with his remnant of a
Glaswegian accent I can't be sure. ;-)

Alan will give a current state of play for Australian software
development organisations, sharing some of his experiences in dealing
with larger Australian organisations, and go on to talk about Functional
Software's approach to enabling a small Aussie player to compete
globally using the Internet. Finally, Alan will show(*) Functional
Software's new cross-platform product, Information Portal for the
Sentinel 3G automated system monitoring and response product, which was
shown last week at the Australian Technology Showcase in Sydney. Rumour
also has it that there will be some free CD's containing copies of the
latest Sentinel 3G for Linux ("stand back, and one at a time please").

Alan is a founding Director of Functional Software and has over 20 years
experience in the IT industry. He has a wide range of Australian and
international experience and is familiar with the challenges (and
rewards) associated with building and managing software companies. His
somewhat irreverent sense of humour means that Alan is always an
entertaining speaker - but especially so after we ply him with a few
drinks before his presentation.

The "First Wednesday" group is a monthly gathering of IT specialists
supported by AUUG (The organisation for Unix and Open Source
professionals) and SAGE-AU (The System Administrators Guild of
Australia), SLPWA (The Society of Linux Professionals of WA) and PLUG
(The Perth Linux Users Group).

It meets the First Wednesday of the month at the Moon and Sixpence Pub,
Murray St, Perth. The meeting starts informally at 6:00pm in rear
private bar of the pub, and moves to a seminar room in the adjoining
Wentworth Hotel some time after 6:30pm. Some maps of the venue location
can be found at <http://www.neep.com.au/first_wednesday/>.

Members of the various Perth IT groups are most welcome, including AUUG,
SAGE-AU, SLPWA, PLUG, Port-80, Computer Network Professionals
Association and anyone else with a vague interest in professional
technical computing.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for what should be a very
enjoyable evening!

Andrew S & Steve Landers.
SAGE-AU AUUG

* Please be advised that the demonstration depends on our being able to
get an Internet connection at the venue, which we are still working
on, but is unfortunately not a definite 'yes' as yet. If anyone has
any information about getting short-term wireless access to the
Internet from within the CBD, please contact me privately ASAP! =)

"Is there? Well I'd like to meet him. I could do with a good laugh."
