There's also the potential that large companies that use OSS in their
operations or business may feel the need to contribute developers and/or
code. As the kernel project has shown, there are no problems with rushed
work being pushed in by big companies - they're simply told to go away
and do it properly this time.
Otherwise ... as James said, if the project leaders are doing their jobs
it shouldn't be an issue, even if some people do feel pressured or feel
they must 'compete'. If they're not... somebody will talk to them, or
fork the project into a more stable and safer variant.

And the "OOh! Shiny!" effect plays a part, too.
