[plug] cancelling a CUPS print job

After an OS upgrade (to andrake 9.2), I switched to CUPS for printing,
which is certainly a lot easier to set up on a network.
But after I managed to send some junk to the printer I couldnt stop
it. Cancelling the active job doesnt stop it.
Even when the CUPS service is stopped, it keeps coming.
'fuser /dev/lp0' shows that a process called 'parallel' is using it,
which needed a 'kill -9'.
Google found complaints about this, but no fix. www.cups.org is down.
Do all CUPS users with parallel printers have this problem?
Anybody have a fix?
cheers, Mike.
