Some hosts will let you record the route taken back to you by the return
packets. This doesn't work all the time, indeed it doesn't seem to work
much at all.

eg.
[09:33:56]luke at in-mta01:~$ ping -R ftp.uwa.edu.au
PING pandora.ucs.uwa.edu.au (130.95.3.26) 56(124) bytes of data.
64 bytes from pandora.ucs.uwa.edu.au (130.95.3.26): icmp_seq=1 ttl=60
time=4.59 ms
RR:     in-mta01.westnet.com.au (203.10.1.47)
        fa2-0.smt.westnet.com.au (202.72.191.193)
        westnet.ix.waia.asn.au (198.32.212.6)
        uwa-parnet2.parnet.edu.au (203.19.110.209)
        130.95.3.29
        pandora.ucs.uwa.edu.au (130.95.3.26)
        pandora.ucs.uwa.edu.au (130.95.3.26)
        parnet2-uwa.parnet.edu.au (203.19.110.210)
        parnet.ix.waia.asn.au (198.32.212.12)

Cheers
