I have a mobility 7500 in my laptop.  It relies on the DRI sourceforge
project for acceleration.  Up until about August it was in various
non-working states, but since then they have made some major
improvements to the code for my card and it works very well enough to
make me smile.  

They put a lot more effort into the more recent cards, so providing the
card is not released-yesterday new, you'd probably go alright.  Keep in
mind though that it is not perfect, and doesn't implement all the
features of the card and can be a slow process if you are waiting for a
particular bug/feature to resolve itself.

I'm definitely with Craig on the NVidia praise  'It just works', and
works well.
