I think the idea of it is that it will pick up entries automatically
from /etc/syslogd.conf (so that you don't need to worry about
configuring any log rotation after editing /etc/syslogd.conf). If the
entry has *.*, the file will be rotated daily. Otherwise, weekly.
Perhaps you are not seeing all your log files in its output because the
log files were recently rotated (if you know Perl, perhaps have a loog
at syslogd-listfile and see what it does). <shrug>
