Subject: October "First Wednesday" meeting

Hi Folks,

This month we've got a special guest and a special event - so we've
delayed the "First Wednesday" meeting till the second Wednesday :-)

This Wednesday, October the 8th we have a presentation by Jamie
Gillespie, Senior Security Analyst from AusCERT in Brisbane. Jamie will
be presenting a review of recent security vulnerabilities, exploits and
trends witnessed in Australia. After Jamie's presentation there will be
opportunity for discussion and detailed questions.

Jamie has worked at AusCERT, in the University of Queensland, for the
last two and a half years. Amongst other things, he works on Internet
threat assessment and response. Prior to joining AusCERT and moving to
Australia, Jamie worked for UUNET Canada in network operations and
started their web hosting division.

Also at this weeks meeting, Kim Shelt will be presented with the
Australian Open Source Community Award in recognition of her efforts in
setting up LinMagAu, promoting the cause of open source and
highlighting Australian contributions to the open source community. It
would be great to have a big roll-up from the various Perth computing
groups to recognise Kim's achievements and help her celebrate.

The "First Wednesday" group is a monthly gathering of IT specialists
supported by AUUG (The organisation for Unix and Open Source
professionals) and SAGE-AU (The System Administrators Guild of
Australia)SLPWA (The Society of Linux Professionals of WA) and PLUG
(The Perth Linux Users Group).

It meets the First Wednesday of the month (except for this month :-))
at the Moon and Sixpence Pub, Murrary St, Perth. The meeting starts
informally at 6:00pm in rear private bar of the pub, and moves to a
seminar room in the adjoining Wentworth Hotel some time after 6:30pm.

Members of the various Perth IT groups are most welcome, including
AUUG, SAGE-AU, SLPWA, PLUG, Port-80, Computer Network Professionals
Association and anyone else with a vague interest in professional
technical computing.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for what should be a great
evening

Steve
