I'm using recent-ish mozilla binaries and j2re 1.4.2-01

Are you using the right plugin? you probably need to be using the gcc32
one:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 20 05:36 ns4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 20 05:36 ns610
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 20 05:36 ns610-gcc32

checking in ~/.mozilla/plugins to see what it is symlinked to if that is
how it installed.

... and just saw Craig's last post, this will compliment it ;)
