It probably involves encryption, probably a PKI method (by the sounds of
what others have said on the list) which would confer 'digital signing',
too. In that case, you need some kind of key exchange (and you wouldn't
need to be connected to the server thereafter). But, it is possible that
Microsoft would enforce some kind of lock-in by introducing an encrypted
component that can only be decrypted via a proprietary mechanism in its
server products.
