gawk can be made to run as awk (e.g. --compat or --traditional), but I'm
surprised that you don't have awk as a symlink to gawk anyway (I think
gawk runs in compatability mode if it's invoked as awk).

I have no idea how you could possible have gawk older than 3.1.0.
Sounds like a path (or $PATH) problem.
