[plug] setting environment variables

Hi,

I have changed my MAILPATH in a .profile file in my home directory and yet 
when I
"echo $MAILPATH" I get nothing!!

Why is my .profile file not observed??

(The .profile file was created by myself ... it wasn't there in the default 
installation)

I've a feeling that a fair amount of info seen on the web is not applicable 
to my distribution .. (Debian)

I think my $HOME/.bashrc file is observed ... in contrast to the .profile file.

I also have no Mailrc file of any sort in any directory
