Try metalog - can be set to cache the entries and seems pretty low
overhead. I also use metalog to trigger a perl script to enter the
message in a (local) mysql database which is synced across to another
machine every few minutes.

Now Mysql causes the spikes, specially when being port scanned etc -
metalog never did!
