Strange.  It bitched about out of space on the /boot partition installing 
from a compiled dpkg (yes, I _do_ use make-kpkg, and it works well for me), 
but when I resized (I blew away the swap part, resized /boot, then put swap 
back, reduced in size by about 16M) and everything installed just fine.

And yet, the used space on /boot reports as 5.9M.  Must be something to do 
with dpkg.
