| If your root partition is the next partition on the disk, I'd just stop
| using the boot partition entirely. If your BIOS and bootloader are
| vaguely recent and your disk isn't too gigantic, you should have no
| problems at all.
There are other reasons to use a separate boot partition. If your
root partition is XFS or something peculiar like that, and you're
using GRUB as a boot loader, you'll need an ext2 boot partition to
load the kernel from.
