I would have to agree with Bill that Gentoo's documentation is excellent.

To make things interesting for you, may also suggest looking at 
SourceMage which is
another source distribution (and my chosen distro)

I personally found the installation of software, after initial install, 
to be less confusing using
cast (sourcemage) as opposed to portage (gentoo).
