Hi Margo, this is one of the more interesting (or frustrating depending
on your point of view!) parts of linux: customising it to you wants

1. colour depth: need more detail, are you using xfree86 or x.org, post
your xf86config, or xorg.conf - separate email.  Also what video card
you have installed, and the video drivers you think it is using
(xfree/x.org, or fglrx (ATI) or nvidia) - X can a real pita as there are
so many variables

2. audio cd: has audio cd ever worked? sound in general? (test with a
hard disk audio file) In most cases, if sound works its a wire missing
from the cd drive to the MB as to why audio cd's dont work - audio in
this form goes via analog, not the data cable.

3. tbird and FF.  What desktop are you using (gnome or kde, or ...)
