[plug] Build systems

Hey Guys,

I've been looking at build systems for larger projects and am curious
as to other people experiences.

Make and associated autoconf tools work well, but its very easy to
turn a project into something unmaintainable. The linux kernel has a
custom build system built on top of make, the kde project uses its own
build system, and Open Office does something else again.

These are custom systems (at least at a cursory glance) Does the list
have any suggestions on larger scale flexible build systems?
