The slave should update itself and query the master if the TTL (time
to live) for an entry in its zone files has expired. 

You can be set the TTL fairly low, as low as 600 seconds, for
"internal" networks without too much of an overhead.

TTL is typically of the order of days by default which can be a PITA
for private networks.
