I haven't setup a modem in Linux in a while (is so much better as a
broadband OS) but the best place to start is Linmodems.org
(http://www.linmodems.org/) as I remember the Lucents are quite easy. I
set one up with little trouble about 3 years ago when I first started
using Debian.
