Hasn't been for a long time. Ruby or Python are much easier to develop 
sizeable applications in than BASIC.

For certain classes of application, PERL will beat the pants off it too 
(for mass text processing, PERL is the bee's knees). For web 
applications, PHP was born for the task and has many suitable 
conveniences, and so on.
