And both are true to an extent.  Kids see the real world in the real
world.

While I probably spent rather more of my childhood reading books than
watching telly (and in both cases, avoiding the real world) and am
probably biased in this regard, I also suspect that there's a much
greater variety of values and ideas expressed in books than in
television.  The economics of producing TV are also such that there's
likely to be a lot more of a commericial influence on TV.  Likewise, old
books are a lot more readily available than old television.  (The
repeats of early Dr Who on at the moment are the exception rather the
norm in this regard.)
