An awful lot of his travelling buddies got eaten by aliens. Or worse.

I distinctly remember lots of The Brigadier's men being killed by huge 
slime-green maggots - and then there was the Crinoid... quite unlike 
the delicate little bottom-walker we see off the Queensland cost today.
