My WM also gets confused by some OO.o windows, although in a different
way - the little popup toolbar-y things that appear when you hold down
the mouse on some buttons appear in the centre of the screen rather than
next to where you clicked and don't disappear properly afterwards. :(

My experience in OO.o installation was "apt-get install openoffice.org"-
which obviously won't work unless you're running sarge or sid.  I
believe that Debian ripped out the "Setup" stage (or at least, made it
non-interactive) to conform to Debian policy.  Debian's OO.o is quite
heavily patched in other ways too so perhaps the automagic font finding
is due to that.
