Hmm... from the XFree86 driver status for XF86-4.3:

i810 supports the i810, i810-DC100, i810e, i815, 830M, 845G, 852GM, 
855GM, and 865G chipsets.

and as your board is 865G (according to:
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bf/ )
it should work, at least with XF86-4.3 .

Perhaps the Intel drivers are only required to enable 3D acceleration 
and/or higher graphics performance? I'm only guessing here.
