I understand that it's apps in general, and the lack of a decent spec
for how they /should/ behave to bludgeon app authors with. There's an
article on freedesktop.org somewhere about this.
Re. hardware support: I recently bought a Canon digital camera to
replace my old Kodak which stopped working properly in Adelaide. The
shell script that I was using to grab photos off the camera, rename
them, and then clear the camera memory worked without changes or any
configuration of new drivers on the new camera. It was also trivial to
write an additional script to take advantage of the orientation sensor
in the new camera and rotate images so that they were the right way up
automatically. The Windows software which came with the camera was an
absolute disaster, involved a reboot to install, and was nowhere near as
nice as gqview for viewing photos.
