[plug] maillog errors

Client is getting a lot of the following in the /var/log/maillog 
Jun  4 06:53:56 mail sendmail[9469]: i53MruJ09469: SYSERR(root): hash map "access": unsafe map file /etc/mail/access.db: Permission denied
Jun  4 06:53:56 mail sendmail[9470]: i53MruJ09470: SYSERR(root): hash map "access": unsafe map file /etc/mail/access.db: Permission denied
Jun  4 06:53:57 mail sendmail[9469]: NOQUEUE: gateway [10.1.1.254] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA
Jun  4 06:53:57 mail sendmail[9470]: NOQUEUE: gateway [10.1.1.254] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA
Jun  4 06:54:01 mail sendmail[9473]: i53Ms1Q09473: SYSERR(root): hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/aliases.db: Permission denied

server is a RH7.3 

permissions for  /etc/mail is:
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root         4096 Jun  3 19:27 mail

Permission for /etc/mail/access.db is
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          379 May 23  2002 access
-rw-------    1 root     root        12288 May 23  2002 access.db

Any ideal how to fix this?
