I don't know much about Gmail but can I ask...does it mean that you have
to have an international network connection working in order to be able
to check your e-mail?

What local mailbox format are you using? Mutt would need to use a "safe"
indexing format in order to avoid problem with people or mail daemons
making manual changes to mailboxes, given that the formats it uses are
often "open" ones that people (er...me) abuse. I wonder why no one has
written indexing support.
