Bare in mind that the protocol is not an open standard like SIP. It will
be a while before we get an open source client that can can connect to
the Skype network. Much like Shareazza and gift can connect to their
seedy p2p network.

To those looking at chatting over the web using VOIP I recommend that
you consider SIP compliant clients like Linphone and Kphone (both have
Debian packages that can installed using apt-get) and are completely
open source. 

Of course Skype is probably going to get very big but if you use a MSN
compliant or multi-protocol messenger you may have noticed that your MSN
list has the highest ratio of annoying people. Expect something similar
form Skype expect you can hear their voices as well!
