FWIW:
I compiled my first 2.6 kernel last night (2.6.4). The only problem I
had was coming to terms with ALSA. On my 3rd compile I had it all going
with the OSS compatibility modules etc. :) I also had to enable module
unloading as it was turned off by default. I had a brief battle with
USB as the default 2.0 selection didn't work as the help text on it
suggested it would, so I selected every UHCI and OHCI thing in site and
it automagically fixed my problems (I'm going to patent this process).
WRT to ALSA, I also had to change the permissions of the newly created
/dev/snd/ files.
Apart from that it was up and running very quickly, including the
recompiled nvidia modules.
I tend to enjoy the trawling through options. As most of the help
says, if in doubt, leave it out (off) ... and if it doesn't boot,
perhaps add it back in :)
