| Hi guys, I'm in the market for a decent laptop.
|
| I've looked through linuxlaptop.com, but there doesn't seem to be any
| discussion about how well particular lappies work with linux.
| Linuxlaptop.org and .net are worse than useless, just pushing hosting and
| domain names.
|
| I have my eye on the Toshiba A10 at the moment (the price is nearly right)
| - I would like any feedback from people who have lappies working with
linux
| as to what they have, how well it works, and whether they'd buy it
again in
| hindsight. Any comments on the A10 would also be helpful. The pedlar
| (salesman) at the Toshiba place is quite happy that I take in a Knoppix CD
| and try it.
I've had a Toshiba M30 since late last year. Everything works except
sleep (haven't bothered) and builtin modem/ethernet (haven't bothered).
I use a wireless Skynet Global PCMCIA card or Xircom ethernet PCMCIA to
ADSL via LAN so it's good for me.
I did a deal trading the wireless card, bag and something-I've-forgotten
for a 2 year extension to the factory warranty. Apparently the wireless
card and Centrino chip are now supported by proprietry drivers but it
works as is.. 8^)==
Note: check which ports come with it before you buy. Mine doesn't have
PS/2, but does have 3 USB, 1 SVideo and a secure digital card slot. I
don't have a SD card to test it. If you are buying a cheaper (less slim)
laptop your ports will prolly be different.
Cost was ~$3k5, but I love the 15.4" wide screen and excellent sound.
Xandros comes up with a Nvidia start screen on startup, but I haven't
had 3D jobs to test it with.
HTH

=============================================================================
When a house is getting long in the tooth, less functional and less
attractive, it gets a renovation.
When a computer system is slow to respond, broken down or incapable, it
is overhauled.
When a car has lost its gloss but brings enough memories of good times
to overcome the desire for a newer model, it is restored.
Funny thing, political correctness.
Women get a makeover.
