Short answer: yes, ofcourse

Longer answer: you may find, depending on the laptop, that certain
devices such as inbuilt winmodems etc may not function. On rare
occasions certain video or audio chipsets may fail to function as
advertised.

Mandrake have a new product called MandrakeMove which is a
pre-installed linux-on-CD kind of deal - just whack the CD in the
drive and boot from it. 

I guess the best bet is to backup your HD and try an install.
