The big plastic blob is a ferrite core for EMI suppression. I'd hack up the existing connector to
try and preserve as much of the cable length as possible and then solder a new connector on.
Failing that, hack off the plastic blob and just go to town. Not the preferred option, but it *will*
work :p)
