I didn't know the technical explanation but being a happy sid user I've
noticed this for quite some time. Apart from the slew of viruses and
spyware (not to mentioned the terribly written apps that are supposed to
be there) that on the machines I have to fix the fonts look awful as
well.

Linux has spoilt me rotten :)
