Any particular webcam? Just a basic USB, or something better?
Do you have the drivers already? They are usually separate from the 
'capture' software. Do you want to stream, or save to file?

I use 'mencoder' of the mplayer project to capture video in realtime
to mpeg4 avi files. I can't really recommend it without knowing your
requirements though.
