Depends on which version of Debian you are using. If you are using stable 
(Woody), then all you will get is security updates. There are no other 
changes.
Once you have sources.lst set up, simply 'apt-get update' to update the 
package list database, and 'apt-get upgrade' to install the upgraded 
packages.

On the other hand, if you are using testing (Sarge), then look out for a big 
download! I don't think there is any way to restrict testing to security 
upgrades, as by definition 'testing' is not a finished product. However, if 
the download will be more than a couple of megabytes, apt-get will ask you if 
you want to continue before it does anything.

I have both systems running - yesterday stable had an upgrade of less than a 
megabyte, testing hit over 100 megabytes :-)

I have no experience with unstable (Sid).
