[plug] Getting processes to suspend and resume without controlling tty

I want to be able to suspend/stop and process and resume/continue it at
a later date without the controlling tty.
I know that you should just be able to send it a signal but I'm not sure
of the 2 signals and couldn't find them in man signals or if I did find
then l missed them probably because I was looking for the wrong thing.
Is this possible?
Tim
