Hi, just signed onto the list (and only been using linux for a couple
of months), here goes...
-- For anyone who wants to skip the long version...
# ltmodem not working under 2.6.9 with a...
# Lucent Winmodem - "Dynalink 56k Internal PCI Modem"
# kppp returns 'exit code 1' when "Connecting to network"
About a week ago I decided to try my hand at installing a new kernel.
Being under gentoo, this was no big deal, and after a swift 'emerge
gentoo-dev-sources', I configured and then installed my new kernel,
the only problem left to surmount being that I cannot get my winmodem
to work.
Upom 'emerge ltmodem' I recieved the news that the version that was
happy installing under the 2.4 kernel would not be sufficiant. So I
proceeded to 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge ltmodem' and then everything
seemed to go according to plan. However when I tried had a look in
'/dev' there was no modem symlink. I had a look around for what it was
supposed to be pointing to so that I could make my own link, but
'ttyLT0' wasn't in there either. After more research I found that the
new version of ltmodem may not load the modules that it needs at
startup anymore, so I went to 'modprobe ltmodem; modprobe ltserial'.
This did not work and returned some error about 'fatal, this or that',
I emerged the latest mod-init-tools and the linux26-headers, and then
tried it again. Sucess (I thought), it let me modprobe both 'ltserial'
and 'ltmodem' (not sure wether I need to have both, seing as I get the
the same responses if I just modprobe 'ltserial'.
So now that the modules were loaded I checked '/dev' and 'ttyLT0' was
in there, so I made a symlink to '/modem', and gave kppp a whirl.
Everything seemed to be going fine, but then when it got to
'connecting to network' it just sat there, and finally crashed out
with and 'exit code 1'.
I tried using wvdial, but that seemed to get to the point where it was
about to connect and then just went crazy sending out the dial signal,
over and over. it made the system really jerky, (mouse, xmms, etc),
and after I "^C"'d it everything returned to normal.
This is as far as I can progress.
I've had a look around on gentoo-bugzilla and there appears to be an
issue with ltmodem referencing 'ltmodem' instead of 'ltserial', but as
far as I can tell this isn't what's causing my current dilemma as I am
able to get up to the point where I've actually dialed my isp.
I find that once I have done all this my modem is not accessable under
the 2.4 kernel either... so now, I'm typing this from XP, not having
all the info at my fingertips may have causes a few indescrepencies,
but I'm fairly sure that this is all accurate.
As I said I'm new to linux, and could easily have overlooked somthing,
or just been stupid, so...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :P
