amateur, I can do better than that without trying :)

My K6-500 gateway died at a load of ~636 (well, I didn't bother trying
to wait for it to come back so reset it) on the weekend. DoS'd when my
son started a peer-to-peer app which hit a test rule in the firewall
that logged everything - I log to a mysql db on the same machine. Live
an learn ...

I found out because the network connection became "intermittent" Was
able to log in, did a top which eventually came up. At this point the
penny dropped as to what had occurred so I just reset it which cleared
out the firewall rule at the same time - back to normal. The most I
load I have noticed for which a machine has come back from was ~60,
again perl scripts logging to mysql databases.
