The usual failure mode for a broken index file is dovecot crashing or
spitting out errors, but it's still worth taking a look.  Just feed
the index files to 'rm' -- Dovecot will regenerate them next time you
open the mailbox.  (In the case of Maildirs, the index files will be
in ~/Maildir/.INBOX/.imap.index*; dunno where they live for mboxes.)
