Eeek.  Trying to understand "man chmod" on Linux systems is an
exercise in confusion.  The info documentation is somewhat better, at
the expense of the command-line info browser being abominable.  The
chmod man page on Apple OS X is brilliant, and the BSD one is also
reasonably coherent, and has example (and also available on-line at
  http://man.netbsd.org/man/chmod
