Hmmm, Well I tried both utf-8 and iso.... Both show funny characters,
but different ones. Of course when I was silly and tried utf-16 I
ended up with a page full of funny characters, including what looked
like Japanese and Chinese characters.

I've just compiled a new kernel (finally a custom kernel for this
machine, taken my time, been busy) so will see what happens after a
reboot.
