I realise that. From the looks of it, my "dear friend" Jed was using
something like a Web-based form interface. I almost feel sorry for him.
I just thought I should make the point.

Yes, that's exactly how broken it was. No alternative. I'm using KMail,
so it'll use the plaintext version if there is one, but I have it set
never to render HTML for security reasons. I might report it to the
admin if I can be bothered with such an act of futility in the near
future. Given that the most detailed feedback contact information I
have is:
If you have any suggestions or complaints about
our technical support<br>service, please e-mail your feedback to
support at asus.com.cn. We will then<br>arrange for a specialist to
work on your issue. Your suggestions and<br>feedback are most
appreciated and allow us to serve you better.<br>
...I don't have much hope.

True. I just have a hard time taking "there's something wrong with your
e-mail" from a "technical" customer "service" rep (I'm starting to feel
like Dr. "frickin laser" Evil here, but the rabbit ears really are
appropriate), when I'm sending RFC compliant e-mail and he's sending me
HTML garbage (which I didn't complain about the first time he did it).
