[plug] gentoo progress

Hi Jim, I built some 40 packages on a system (big update) this afternoon
with no problems. There are a number of causes I have seen for what you
seem to have experienced:

1. the servers are busy (rare, even with a new release which has just
happened a couple of days ago)

2. wrong choice of the mirror and FETCHCOMMAND in make.conf (have you
used "mirrorselect"

3. planetmirror sucks - dont use it.

4. server maintenance - it does happen, and sometimes you get a
coincidence of multiple outages that affects the fallbacks.

Instead of a spare harddisk, I use a small 4G partition (easy with
todays 200G drives) with a small basic gentoo install. I update through
a chroot (just like when doing the original install!), and occasionally
test boot it to make sure it still works.
